Maternal Health Data Visualization

Visualization 1

Bubble scatter: county-level access vs. outcome

This bubble scatter plots every county across Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The x-axis is maternal mortality rate (MMR, deaths per 100,000 live births); the y-axis is birth centers per 1,000 women ages 15–44; bubble size reflects the population of women of reproductive age; and color indicates state. If access to birth centers drove outcomes, we'd expect a clear negative slope — but Arkansas counties cluster in the high-MMR zone regardless of access, suggesting other factors are at play.

Regional severity ladder: 14 regions ranked by MMR

Fourteen regions ranked by average MMR, with bar color encoding severity from green (low) to red (high). The center count to the right of each bar shows total birth centers in that region. The region with the most birth centers (Mississippi South, 134) ranks 9th of 14 on MMR — more centers does not guarantee lower mortality.
